| The Digital Cartography and Precinct
Demographics Section is responsible for maintaining maps of
record that document the various election districts and voting
precincts in South Carolina. These responsibilities also
encompass providing technical assistance for digital mapping
and the development and modification of legislative plans for
various political districts. South Carolina Election Districts
include voting
precincts, county councils, municipal councils, school
districts, state house, state senate, and US congress.
In preparation of the redistricting process for S.C., the
Digital Cartography section has partnered with the S.C. General
Assembly to establish basic criteria for redistricting.
These criteria are based upon constitutional requirements,
voting rights regulations, and principles defined through
subsequent judicial court rulings. Digital Cartography has also defined basic
procedures and guidelines for local redistricting and reprecincting. These general procedures are available at
